The Axis Deer or Chital Deer, is a deer species native to India and Pakistan. A moderate-sized deer, large males can weigh 135 to 200 lb, females weigh 80-100 lbs.
Males are larger than females, and antlers are present only on males. The upper parts are golden and completely covered in white spots. The abdomen rump, throat, insides of legs, ears, and tail are all white. The antlers are almost always three points per side. Non-typical or extra points on an Axis Deer are rare.
In 1932, Axis Deer were introduced to Texas. In 1988, self-sustaining herds were present in 27 counties in Texas. Axis is most populous in the Hill Country of Texas.
Prized for its delicious meat and stunning hide and beautiful antlers, Axis Deer are a favorite game specie to hunt in Texas.
Axis Deer Hunting in Texas
Axis Deer can be hunted year round in Texas. While they are an antlered specie, who drop their antlers every year, about half our deer will drop in late winter, the other half in late summer, so we almost always have hard antlered Axis Deer to hunt. June is a good month in the summer, while anytime in the winter from October through January is great.
We hunt Axis Deer in blinds over food plots or feeders and safari style. The mornings and evenings are spent in a blind. We will hunt safari style during mid-day, after the morning hunt and before the evening hunt.
Axis are a bit bigger than our native Whitetail, but any of the common 6.5 mm and 308 calibers and up that are commonly used for deer hunting will work fine for Axis.
