ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Banteng

The Banteng (Bos javanicus) is native to Southeast Asia, distinguished by its unique "white stockings" on its legs and a white patch on its rump. Banteng are a very popular wild game species for hunters in Australia. Intrepid Ranch is one of very few ranches that offer Banteng for hunting in Texas, or in the entire USA.

  • Size: Adult banteng stand approximately 1.5 to 1.65 meters tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 2000 lbs!
  • Diet: They are herbivores that primarily graze on grasses, bamboo, fruits, and leaves.

Conservation Status. In their native habitat, the banteng is currently listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List.

  • Threats: Major threats include habitat loss, poaching for meat, and hybridization with domestic cattle, which pollutes their wild gene pool.
  • Population: There are estimated to be fewer than 5,000 to 8,000 individuals remaining in the wild.

  • Native Range: They are found in fragmented populations across Cambodia, Indonesia (Java and Borneo), Thailand, and Vietnam. They have been extirpated in India and Bangladesh.
  • Introduced Range: A significant feral population of about 8,000–10,000 exists on the Cobourg Peninsula in Northern Australia, where they were introduced in the mid-19th century.
  • Environment: They prefer open, dry deciduous forests and grasslands but may move into denser forests and bamboo jungles during the monsoon season.

When to Hunt

Banteng can be hunted year round in Texas.

How we hunt

We hunt Banteng safari style.

What to Hunt With

Banteng are big, tough animals. We recommend hunting Banteng with a large caliber rifle, using bullets that are heavy for caliber and tough. Swift A-Frame, Barnes TSX or North Fork bullets are ideally suited for Banteng hunting. We would recommend calibers from 300 Win Mag and larger. If you have any questions about suitable calibers for Banteng hunting, please contact us.
