ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Gemsbuck

The

Gemsbok or Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is a large, striking African antelope known for its long, straight, spear-like horns and ability to thrive in harsh desert conditions.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Gemsbok have a light taupe to tan coat with bold black-and-white markings on their face, legs, and flanks. Both males and females (bulls and cows) possess impressive horns which are used for defense against predators.
  • Habitat: They are native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa, particularly the Kalahari and Namib deserts, and are perfectly adapted for survival in these waterless landscapes. A sizable non-native population also exists in the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico, USA.
  • Diet: Primarily grazers, gemsbok are opportunistic feeders that switch to browsing during dry seasons. They can dig for roots and tubers and eat wild melons and cucumbers to obtain necessary moisture, allowing them to go for long periods without drinking water.
  • Adaptations: Their unique physiological adaptations include the ability to raise their body temperature significantly to avoid sweating and conserve water, as well as specialized kidneys that minimize water loss. They are most active during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk.
  • Behavior: They live in mixed herds of about 10 to 40 individuals, with a strict social hierarchy. When threatened, they use their sharp horns effectively to fight off predators, including lions and hyenas.

When to Hunt

Gemsbok can be hunted any time of the year. Their coat remains the same from summer through winter and since they are a horned specie, they do not drop and regrow, like a deer would.

How we hunt

We primarily hunt Gemsbok safari style. Its the most productive way, using hunting vehicles to find the Gemsbuck.

What to Hunt With

Gemsbok are very tough animals. Far tougher than their size or appearance would lead you to believe. While Gemsbok have been taken with smaller calibers, like 6.5 CM or 308 Win, we strongly recommend larger calibers with heavy bullets designed for large or dangerous game. 300 win mag/30-06 up to 375 H&H, are suitable calibers for Gemsbok.
