ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Nilgai Antelope

The

nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), often called the "blue bull," is the largest antelope species native to the Indian subcontinent. It is unique for its ox-like appearance and is a common sight in central and northern India.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size and Weight: Adult males typically weigh between 240–675 lbs, while females are lighter, ranging from 220-450. They stand about 4–5 feet at the shoulder.
  • Appearance: Males (bulls) are distinguished by their bluish-gray coats and a pair of short, black, spike-like horns. Females and juveniles are generally a brownish or tawny color and do not have horns.
  • Distinctive Markings: Both sexes feature white patches on the cheeks and throat, a white "bib" on the neck, and white "socks" on their legs.
  • Unique Features: Bulls have a prominent tuft of hair on their throat known as a "beard".

Habitat and Distribution

  • Native Range: Nilgai are native to India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
  • Introduced Populations: They were introduced to Texas in the 1920s and 1930s as game animals. Today, a large, free-ranging population of over 30,000 exists in South Texas.
  • Preferred Terrain: They thrive in semi-arid regions, grasslands, and scrub forests.

Behavior and Diet

  • Diet: As herbivores, they primarily graze on grasses and herbs but also eat leaves, fruit, and seeds.
  • Social Structure: They typically live in small herds of 10 or fewer members.
  • Temperament: Known for being extremely wary and having excellent eyesight, they are famously difficult for hunters to approach.

Hunting and Culinary Use

In Texas, nilgai are popular game animals. Their meat is highly regarded for being lean, mild in flavor, and having a texture similar to veal or high-quality beef. Because of their size and toughness, they are often described as "deer on steroids".

Nilgai Antelope Hunting

When to Hunt

Nilgai can be hunted year round in Texas.

How we hunt

We primarily hunt Nilgai safari style.

What to Hunt With

Nilgai Antelope are very tough! We recommend a large caliber, with heavy for caliber bullets, starting at a 300 Win Mag as the minimum. A 338 or 375 H&H are very good calibers for Nilgai. Bullet weight and type are as important. Swift A Frame, Barnes TSX or a bonded, partition style bullet is recommended.
