ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Red Stag

A red stag is a mature male red deer (Cervus elaphus), the fourth-largest deer species in the world, surpassed only by moose, elk, and sambar deer. Known for their majestic branching antlers and deep guttural "roar" during the mating season, they are a central figure in European wildlife history and a major global big-game species. Key Characteristics

  • Size and Weight: Adult stags typically weigh between 350 and 530 pounds, though exceptional specimens in the Carpathian Mountains can exceed 1,000 pounds.
  • Antlers: Only males grow antlers, which they shed and regrow annually. These complex bone structures can grow up to one inch per day during peak summer growth.
  • Appearance: They have a distinctive reddish-brown summer coat that transitions to a thicker, grayish-brown coat in winter.

Behavior and Life Cycle

  • The Rut (Roar): This mating season (typically September–October in the Northern Hemisphere) is marked by stags bellowing loud roars to attract females (hinds) and intimidate rivals.
  • Diet: As ruminants, they are "intermediate feeders," grazing on lush grasses in spring and browsing on tree bark or acorns in autumn and winter.
  • Lifespan: Red deer typically live 10 to 13 years in the wild, though they can reach 20 years in captivity.

Global PresenceWhile native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, red deer were successfully introduced to other regions in the 19th and 20th centuries.

  • New Zealand: Famous for producing some of the world's largest trophy stags due to a lack of natural predators and selective breeding.
  • Argentina: Home to massive free-ranging herds, particularly in the Patagonia and La Pampa regions.
  • United States: Found on managed hunting ranches in Texas.

Culinary and Economic Value

  • Venison: Red stag meat is highly prized for being lean, high in protein, and having a mild, earthy flavor that is less "gamey" than other wild meats.
