ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Sable Antelope

The Sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) is a large, powerful African ungulate known for its scimitar-shaped horns and striking coloration. Native to the wooded savannas of East and Southern Africa, it is often considered one of the most majestic of the antelope species.

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration: Mature males (bulls) are distinctively glossy black, while females and juveniles are generally chestnut to dark brown. Both sexes feature stark white facial markings and underbellies.
  • Horns: Both males and females possess ringed horns that arch backward. In males, these can reach lengths of up to 65 inches (1.65 meters), while females' horns are shorter and less curved.
  • Size: They stand about 46 to 56 inches at the shoulder and can weigh between 485 and 600 pounds.

Behavior and Ecology

  • Diet: They are primarily specialized grazers that feed on mid-length grasses, but they will also browse on herbs and leaves, particularly during the dry season.
  • Social Structure: Sable live in maternal herds of 10 to 30 individuals, led by a single dominant territorial bull. Young males are typically expelled from the herd around age three and form bachelor groups until they are strong enough to compete for territory.
  • Defense: Known for being highly aggressive when threatened, they will stand their ground against predators like lions. Their sharp, backward-curving horns are lethal weapons capable of impaling attackers.

Conservation and SubspeciesThe species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with an estimated total population of around 75,000. However, certain subspecies are under threat:

  • Giant Sable Antelope (H. n. variani): Found only in Angola, it is Critically Endangered due to habitat loss and the effects of civil war.
  • Other Subspecies: These include the Southern (Common) sable, the Zambian sable, and the Eastern (Roosevelt's) sable.

What to Hunt With

Sable are incredibly tough antelope! While some common calibers used for deer hunting can be successful, we strongly recommend at least a 300 win mag, or larger be used to hunt Sable. 375 H&H or 416 Rem are great choices as well. Use heavy bullets designed for hunting large or dangerous game.
