ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Scimbok

The Scimbok is a rare hybrid antelope created by crossbreeding two species in the Oryx genus: the Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) and the Scimitar-horned Oryx (Oryx dammah). Physical CharacteristicsThe Scimbok typically combines the most prominent features of its parent species:

  • Horns: It possesses long, ridged horns that can grow to over 40 inches in length. While the Gemsbok has straight horns and the Scimitar has curved horns, Scimbok horns are often straight or slightly curved.
  • Size: Mature males stand roughly 44–48 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 400 and 500 pounds.
  • Coloration: They generally have a pale fawn or grayish-brown body with the bold black-and-white facial markings characteristic of the Gemsbok. They may also feature a black dorsal stripe and white accents on their legs.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Origin: The Scimbok is not a naturally occurring wild species; it is primarily bred on exotic game ranches, particularly in the Texas Hill Country.
  • Environment: They thrive in arid and semi-arid terrains similar to the native habitats of their parent species (the Sahara and Kalahari deserts).
  • Availability: As of 2026, they are popular in Texas for both conservation efforts and year-round trophy hunting.

Parent Species Context

  • Gemsbok: A large desert antelope native to Southern Africa, known for its resilience in extreme heat and its ability to survive without drinking water for long periods.
  • Scimitar-horned Oryx: Formerly classified as "Extinct in the Wild," this species has seen successful reintroduction efforts in North Africa (such as Chad and Tunisia) thanks to breeding programs on Texas ranches and in global zoos.

Scimbok can be hunted year round in Texas.

How we hunt

Safari style, spot and stalk.

What to Hunt With

Like Gemsbok, Scimbok are fairly big and can be tough. While 6.5 CM can be sufficient, we recommend larger calibers .308 win and up for best results. Any of the 300  mag or 7 Mag cartridges are both an excellent choice.
