ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Animal Name

The

Texas Dall Sheep is a unique, hybrid breed of "hair sheep" developed in Texas during the early 1900s at the famous Y.O. Ranch. Unlike the wild Alaskan Dall sheep, the Texas Dall is a designer breed specifically created for hunting and ranching by crossing Mouflon ewes with domestic Rambouillet or Merino rams.

Key Physical Characteristics

  • Coat: Primarily snow-white or golden-white. They are hair sheep, meaning they typically shed or have minimal wool compared to domestic breeds.
  • Horns: Rams feature massive, curling horns that do not shed and continue to grow throughout their life. Horn lengths typically range from 30 to 45 inches, with some record-breaking rams exceeding 40 inches.
  • Size: Mature rams generally weigh between 130 and 160 pounds, while females (ewes) are smaller, weighing between 75 and 100 pounds.
  • Appearance: Their horns and hooves are often colorless or pale, contributing to their distinctive all-white aesthetic.
