ANIMAL HIGHLIGHT

Waterbuck

The waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large, robust antelope native to sub-Saharan Africa, known for its extreme dependence on water sources. It belongs to the genus Kobus and is distinguished by two primary varieties: the common waterbuck, which features a prominent white ring on its rump, and the defassa waterbuck, which has solid white patches instead. Physical Characteristics

  • Size and Weight: They are among the heaviest antelopes; males can weigh up to 262 kg (578 lbs) and stand about 127 cm (50 in) at the shoulder, while females are approximately 25% smaller.
  • Horns: Only males possess long, spiral-structured horns that curve backward and then forward, reaching lengths of up to 100 cm (40 in).
  • Coat: They have a shaggy, reddish-brown to gray coat that darkens with age. The fur is coated in an oily, musky secretion that provides waterproofing and acts as an insect repellent.
  • Markings: Beyond the rump ring, they have white patches above the eyes, around the nose and mouth, and a cream-colored "bib" on the throat.

Habitat and Diet

  • Water Dependency: Waterbucks inhabit scrub and savanna areas strictly near permanent water sources like rivers and lakes. They cannot tolerate dehydration and must drink daily.
  • Diet: Primarily grazers, they consume a diet consisting of 70% to 95% grass, though they will occasionally browse on leaves and herbs when grass is scarce.

Behavior and Reproduction

  • Social Structure: They are gregarious, forming herds of 6 to 30 individuals. These include nursery herds (females and calves) and bachelor herds (young males).
  • Defense Mechanism: When threatened by predators like lions or hyenas, waterbucks often flee into deep water to seek refuge, as many land predators are reluctant to follow.
  • Breeding: Breeding can occur year-round in equatorial regions. After a gestation period of roughly 7 to 9 months, a single calf is born. Calves are kept hidden in thickets for the first 2 to 8 weeks of life.

Conservation StatusThe IUCN classifies the common waterbuck as Least Concern, though the defassa waterbuck is listed as Near Threatened. Major threats include habitat loss due to human settlement and illegal poaching for their meat.
