Transcaspian urials (Ovis vignei arkal) are native to western Central Asia, specifically the region east of the Caspian Sea. Their range includes:
- Kazakhstan: Western areas, such as the Ustyurt Plateau and the Fetisovo Plateau.
- Uzbekistan: Parts of the Ustyurt Plateau.
- Turkmenistan: Western regions, including the southern areas of the Kopet Dag Mountains.
- Iran: Northern regions, including Golestan, Gorkhod, Serany, and Tandoreh Protected Areas, as well as the Heidary Wildlife Refuge and Binalood and Hezar-Masjed mountain ranges.
- Afghanistan: Limited areas near the borders with Iran and Turkmenistan.
They inhabit plateaus, coastal cliffs, grassy slopes, and mountainous regions below the tree line, preferring open, rolling terrain over rocky mountain areas.
